heartbreak hurts
that's what she tells himself as she
sits silently in the subway train
watching the glimmering lights of
downtown d.c.
race past the dirty windows

but maybe it would hurt less
if she would stop falling in love
with every man who kisses her
and it would be easier to deal with
if she didn't keep reading those
messages over and over again

curled up in her twin-sized bed
buried underneath an atmosphere of self-doubt
only then does she dismiss her problems
as nothing more than small and insignificant
even though she is crying as she says it
and her phone is never fully charged
